Jill Gilbert was shopping at the Wellington Mall when she sighted a group of musicians. Taking a seat in the audience, she began to sing along. Before she knew it, she was invited up to sing with the group.

Now she’s a member of the Royal Palm Beach Musicians Guild.

“It’s fun for me,” said Gilbert, 39, who lives west of Boca Raton. “I like to sing, it’s fun to be singing along with people, and I like to get other people to sing.”

SIGNS FOR POLO PUSHED CLUB TO REAPPLY WITH STATE DOT

September 6, 2006 on 8:36 am | In Features, Local News, Sun-Sentinel Features | No Comments

International Polo Club Palm Beach is going to reapply for directional signs off Interstate 95 and Florida’s Turnpike, after a history of polo clubs in Wellington being denied signs by the state.

The Florida Department of Transportation denied the latest sign request, made in December 2005, saying new criteria for signs for limited-access facilities have to be within five miles of the interchange, and that the polo club is about 11.5 miles away, according to a letter from traffic studies project manager Julio Alegre.

“Furthermore, the subject interchange is currently under construction, and is already cluttered with destination guide signs,” the letter said.

The Rude, Crude and Socially Unacceptable

I think somewhere we’ve lost having respect for other people. In fact, sometimes we can be downright selfish.
You’re at a romantic little restaurant, maybe for a special occasion even. However, instead of the quiet music playing softly in the background, there’s a crying baby. It’s 10 PM – crying baby!

Little Richard a Living Legend

September 1, 2006 on 9:30 am | In Celebrity Profiles | No Comments

Some legendary musicians are just that, legendary, some fade into memories just to have their name and their music become a tough trivia question on a quiz show. Little Richard is not one of them.

Turn on the TV today and you’ll find him, alive, well and still in that seemingly perpetual motion, that high energy that he’s famous for. In a currently airing TV commercial for insurance, you’ll spot him, instantly recognizable, there sits the man known as the “Architect of Rock and Roll,” not many could make one line so funny or so memorable - as he belts out “Mashed potatoes and gravy…cranberry sauce,” followed by the infamous, “WOOOOO,” with an expression on his face that is all at once over the top dramatic and yet in that same instance he’s letting you in on the joke, funny, you can just feel
the smile spread across your face.

Brett Butler - Grace Under Pressure

September 1, 2006 on 7:44 am | In Interviews | No Comments

Southern accents are deceptive, radiating warmth, exuding southern charm and hospitality…that southern drawl drips down your ear like mint juleps down your throat on a hot July afternoon, lulling one into a false sense of security. Comedian, Brett Butler has that ability and just when you think you’re safe, she’s gonna kick your butt right out of the house.

Butler starred in TV’s Grace Under Fire from 1993 to 1998. Her quick wit and dead on take of the human existence should serve her well in her next endeavor when she takes on Moochers, adult children who just can’t seem to get themselves off their parent’s couch, find a job, a place to live and take on the huge responsibility of taking care of themselves. Toss in some mooching friends and relatives for a good measure and, of course, once they’re out of the house - redecorate the room.

This new reality show could be called Grace Under Pressure, but Butler’s been there done that, messed that up, got up and dusted myself off and did it again attitude makes her the ideal lady for the job.

“Reality television…there are some truly horrible moments… no one can avoid.”
